About This Piece:

I painted this original abstract portrait of a smiling Teddy Roosevelt in acrylic during my Summer Barn Residency. Just before creating it, I had finished teaching a workshop on the importance of value, the lightness and darkness within a color. Value is what gives a painting depth and breathes life into its subject.

While teaching, I realized something I had always practiced but never put into words: the color wheel is also a value scale. Placing different hues side by side can create the same visual impact as shifting through a monochromatic value range. With this piece, I set out to test that idea by working with four distinct values across multiple hues. The result confirmed the theory and became both an experiment and a breakthrough moment in my process.

I chose Teddy Roosevelt as the subject because he embodies boldness, resilience, and the spirit of adventure-qualities that align with the daring use of color and value shifts in this portrait. His lively smile felt like the perfect match for experimenting with vibrant hues and layered meaning.
